During hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), some individuals may experience discomfort or pain in their ears due to changes in pressure within the hyperbaric chamber. Is it normal to feel ear pain during HBOT? What can we do to relieve this situation? This article will help you solve these problems.
Causes of Ear Pain During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
The tympanic cavity is located along the external auditory canal on the inner side of the middle ear's eardrum. As the atmospheric chamber undergoes pressurization and depressurization, the air pressure within the canal remains in equilibrium with the external atmospheric pressure. Nevertheless, the pressure within the tympanic cavity may not equalize promptly, leading to a pressure disparity across the eardrum. This can result in congestion of the eardrum, causing individuals undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy to experience ear discomfort.
Normally, the following situations are more likely to cause ear pain during HBOT.
So be aware that if you have a cold or sinus congestion, it’s best to postpone hyperbaric treatment until you’re fully recovered.
How to Relieve Ear Pain During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Ear balance difficulties, pressure, and ear pain are just the most common negative side effects of HBOT. Don’t worry. These are typically temporary and easily managed. Here are some methods that can help you relieve ear discomfort during hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
1. Chewing Gum, swallowing small sips of water.
2. Yawing or open mouths wide periodically during HBOT.
3. Close your mouth and hold your nose firmly between your fingers and thumb. Just like blowing your nose, but keep your nose and mouth closed.
4. Massage the area under the ears and behind the chin.
5. Try turning your head to the right, and then to the left. Keep repeating the previous steps until the pressure in your ears is equalized.
If the above methods cannot relieve ear discomfort or severe ear pain occurs. Don't hesitate to get in touch with your doctor or professional immediately to inquire.
